Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a bacteria infection that affects any part of the urinary tract. Urinary system consists of the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. This health problem affects millions of people every year, especially women who are prone to infection though reason is not yet established. It is the second most common type of infection in the body.
When bacteria get into the bladder or kidney and multiply in the urine, they cause a UTI .The most common type of UTI is a kidney infection, known as pyelonephritis and is much more serious. Although they cause discomfort, urinary tract infection can usually be quickly and easily treated with a short course of antibiotics.
Studies have shown that breastfeeding can reduce the risk of UTI in infant .some of the symptoms for UTI include frequent urination along with feeling of having to urinate even though there may be very little urine to pass, a need to urinate during night, discomfort or pain at the urethra with urination and pain in the midline suprapublic region among others.
UTI’s are most common in sexually active women and increase diabetics and people with sickle-cell disease or anatomical malformation of the urinary tract through the urethra (an ascending infection), poor toilet habits can predispose to infection, but other factors (pregnancy in women, prostrate enlargement in men) are also important and in many cases the initiating event is unclear.
UTI’s are treated with antibacterial drugs .The choice of drug and length of treatment depends on the parent’s history and the urine test that identify the offending bacteria.
